Bach Akademie Australia | The Class of ’85

Bach Akademie’s  second program of the year, ‘The Class of ’85’ celebrates music of the three great composers born in 1685, Bach, Handel and Scarlatti and features soprano Susannah Lawergren in Bach’s secular cantata BWV 209 and mezzo soprano Hannah Fraser in Domenico Scarlatti’s ‘Salve Regina’.

The odds are slim that three musicians of global significance could be born in the same year, however in 1685, that’s exactly what happened. Domenico Scarlatti, Georg Frideric Handel and Johann Sebastian Bach were The Class of ’85, and their overwhelming influence on music cannot be overstated, enduring to this day. Featuring Handel’s rich Concerto Grosso in B flat major, op.6 no.7, Domenico Scarlatti’s ‘Salve Regina’ with mezzo soprano Hannah Fraser, and J.S. Bach’s magnificent secular cantata BWV 209 ‘Non sa che sia dolore’ with soprano Susannah Lawergren, this program celebrates the supreme craftsmanship, versatility and imagination of these three titans of Western classical music.

Mozart’s Salzburg and Linz

The ensemble’s dear friend Erin Helyard returns to lead this beautiful all-Mozart program.
As composer and performer, Wolfgang was shaped by two Austrian cities: his birthplace, Salzburg, with which he had a love-hate relationship, and his chosen home of Vienna.

Between the two, the picturesque town (now city) of Linz was never more than a vacation stopover, but as you’ll hear, it was an especially fruitful ‘working holiday’ musically speaking.

Mozart was a violist and adding an extra viola to a quartet always brought out the best in him. His first quintet, in B flat major K. 174, dates from a time when for once Salzburg was not getting on his nerves: the family had just moved from their parsimonious one-bedroom flat to an 8-room apartment, replete with a little ballroom for entertaining and concerts, and a garden for shooting contests! Wolfgang, at 17, finally with his own “space”, was about to produce his amazing early symphonies in G minor and A major. This more modest piece still has a symphonic richness, owing to the complex inner parts and use of double bass. If it’s your first encounter, you’re in for a treat.

The Southern Highlands Symphony Orchestra (SHSO) was formed in 2014 as a result of overwhelming interest in establishing a symphony orchestra in the region. The founding Artistic Director and Conductor is Dr Allan Stiles.

The orchestra has performed many premiere performances by Australian composers. Soloists from the region, overseas and nationally have performed with the orchestra.

The SHSO has four concert series a year.
